Hello there! Long time, no see. I kind of abandoned this blog for a while and this has its reasons. I don‘t want to go in-depth about it in this blog post, but the great news are: I am back! And I am here to wish you a very happy and successful new year! I hope you had a very fun New Year‘s Eve and started the year right. Maybe you even set some goals for 2018. I know I did 🙂
In this blog post I want to talk all about my goals for this year (count how many times I write ‚year‘ in this post, haha). As a twentysomething I am in a stage of my life where I want to achieve a lot of great things. And I set my goals accordingly.
First, I want to talk about how I set my goals and then also tell you what my goals are, hoping to maybe inspire you or give you further ideas for possible goals.
I start setting my goals by not starting with goals. Yes, you read that right. The first thing I did was setting my priorities. I think something that is even more important than goals for the new year are your priorities. What is, that you value the most? If you had to decide between going to the gym or meeting with friends, what would you choose? What are your priorities?
It is very important to decide this first, because every time there is going to be a conflict between your goals in the new year, this is the list that is going to guide you. We all set ourselves a lot more goals than we can achieve. We think we are going to have all the time in the world in the New Year, but we don‘t. And so ultimately there are going to be situations where you have to decide what is more important to you in that moment. That is what this list is for.
My priorities are:
- Family and friends
According to this list, I would choose to go out with friends and not working out if I could only choose one of those. Think about your values and write a list of your own.
Next, I choose areas of my life that I want to improve in 2018. I choose 4 different areas and I would say that there is no point in choosing too many. You can‘t change everything at once and so you are only going to be disappointed in not succeeding.
The categories I choose are:
These are the areas that I want to work on this year. What are yours? Imagine yourself on the 31st December 2018. What do you do? Where are you? What did you accomplish this year? Choose your categories accordingly.
So now is the time to define your goals. I purposely wrote goals the entire time instead of resolutions. What I mean by goals? A clearly defined picture of what you want. Something, that you can integrate in your planning for 2018. Something that you can break into little tasks, so you can achieve it.
My goals for the 4 different categories are:
- stop smoking
- drink less alcohol
- get my skin/hormones under control
- work out more
- meditate more
- learn to play the guitar
- perfect calligraphy
- finish distance studies
- start a YouTube channel
- read more and learn more
- save at least 1000 Euros
- 52 weeks challenge
- invest money
The next step is to create a master plan on how to carry out these goals. Chances are, that if you only write down ‘save 1000$ by the end of the year’ but never really plan on how to do it, you are not going to make it. You are not even going to remember you set this goal for yourself. That’s why it’s important to create a plan on how the achieve these goals, break it down in small steps and schedule in the first doable step in your calendar. Not only planning, but getting started is the key!
You can create a very detailed plan for every goal, the more detailed the better. The less you have to think about how to even start, the more likely you are going to start.
I hope you got some ideas out of this blog post and now feel ready to set goals and carry out them in 2018! What are your goals for the new year? Share them with me down in the comments 🙂
