How to go vegan and stay vegan

I tried many times to go vegan. The reason I wanted to do it was that I heard that it is healthier, your skin is going to look better, you are going to have more energy and get fit. Well, I thought this is great and what I need. I wanted to be more healthy but I didn‘t know where to start. Veganism seemed easy enough – no calorie counting, macros or whatever, just don‘t eat anything that contains animal products. Not very complicated.

I also heard that it doesn‘t matter how much you eat when you are a vegan. As long as you are eating vegan and eat a lot of vegetables and fruit, it doesn‘t matter how many calories or how much food you eat. You are going to be healthier.

So my main reason was my health and wellbeing. And I failed. A lot of times.

Most of the time I just really had a craving for something not vegan – like cream cheese or bacon – and I said to myself: „my health is going to survive this, I mean, most of the time I was eating vegan.“ But then, I was feeling guilty, because I couldn‘t keep up with veganism so I just dropped it altogether.

Then, after some time, I wanted to be healthier again, I wanted to try veganism again, but this time, I really wanted to get through with it. I didn‘t. I didn‘t know what was the reason that I just couldn‘t stay vegan.

So I forgot about it for a while and thought maybe that‘s not for me. I mean, I am from a little village in Hungary, where my grandma snapped the necks of chicken right in front of me as I was a child and it didn‘t even bother me. We had animals and it was natural that we ate them and collected eggs and such. I never really questioned if it was okay or not.

Until I watched a YouTube video (this one). In this video a youtuber talks about how she lost weight on a vegan diet. She points out this speech that everyone should watch. I heard a lot about this speech, so I thought I would just finally watch it and see for myself what the hype is all about. You can watch it here.

This speech actually changed my life, my mindset and my outlook on veganism. This speech decided for me that I am going to be vegan. This time not for me – but for the animals.

After I watched the speech, I was sure, that I couldn‘t think of myself as a reasonable human being, if I just continue with my life the same way. After the whole information I got from the speech, I knew, that I couldn‘t live like I did my whole life. So I went vegan, practically overnight.

I threw away every piece of food that wasn‘t vegan. I even threw away almost all of my makeup that wasn‘t vegan (I had to keep some products, so that I still could do my makeup). Also, I immediately ordered vegan makeup and skin care products online. All this in one day. I changed my life in one day.

So how can you go vegan and stay vegan?

Don‘t do it for yourself. Do it for the animals, for the earth, but not for your health. If you do it for something, that is greater than yourself, it is a lot easier. It is quite tempting to cheat on your diet now and then, if your health is your only motivation. But it is not tempting to eat meat if you just can‘t bear the idea, that an innocent animal died for it. Just don‘t do it for yourself.

I know you might think that you are going to miss cheese, or milk, or meat, or whatever, I thought that too. Sometimes I missed them also, as I was trying to be vegan for my health. After I went vegan for the animals, I don‘t even think about eating something that came from animals.

I recommend, that you watch the speech. It made it a lot easier for me. I think, it is going to make it easier for you, too. Educate yourself on what the animals go through so that you can eat animal products.
